June 2008

Good Morning!

"Then little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven." And He laid His hands on them and departed from there. Now behold, one came and said to Him "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is God. But if you want to enter into life, Keep the commandments." (Matthew 19:13-17)

I believe every prisoner has a hope of something beyond their circumstance. It is hard to fathom that living a life in an 8 foot cell can be a place of hope. Yet, I believe that this is our mission. Our mission is to bring the light of hope into a place of frustrating abandonment. We are there because we care. Our care is the Gospel of hope! Here is a letter I just received at the end of last month:

Dear Fr. David,

I wanted to write to you and thank you for the years of letters and "Go Forth". I will finally be going to my home at the end of June. Receiving your letters made me actually happy to see that I was getting mail. Many days your letters were the only correspondence I got. I am so thankful that you have taken, "Remember the prisoners as if chained with them, those who are mistreated, since you yourselves are in the body also." (Hebrews 13:3) Every year I have looked forward to getting the calendars you have sent me. I have the icons you have sent me taped to my locker and have given many to fellow prisoners whom asked about them. I have worn the New Testament study Bible to the point that it is held together with tape and prayer. I plan on buying a good Orthodox Bible once I am free. So, once again, thank you so much for the years of letters and pamphlets. I just did not want you to waste postage on sending me stuff after the end of June. You have truly made my imprisonment a better passing of time for me because of your agape and generosity. (Shawn in Kansas)

Please pray for those who are in prison! Help us continue this ministry by your prayers and financial support.

In Christ's love I write,

Fr. David
